What Happens If You Miss a Debt Counselling Payment?
What to do if a debt-counselling payment is missed or at risk, and why acting quickly matters.
Act before the payment date where possible
If you know a payment will be short, contact your debt counsellor immediately. Early notice gives more room to discuss evidence, options and the risks linked to your order or proposal.
One missed payment versus ongoing default
A single missed payment and repeated missed payments are not the same risk. Do not assume creditors will ignore non-payment because you are under debt counselling.
What not to do
- Do not ignore calls, letters or emails.
- Do not redirect the payment without advice.
- Do not borrow from high-cost lenders to hide the problem.
- Do not assume a payment holiday exists unless it is confirmed properly.
Emergency budget triage
List the reason for the shortfall, the amount missing, income expected, essential expenses and any documents proving the change. This makes the conversation more practical.
Keep records
Save messages, proof of payment, bank statements and any response from the counsellor or credit provider. If the matter escalates, records are important.
